The couple jointly announced their divorce on social media. Trudeau, 51, and Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, 48, married in May 2005 and have three children.
"Sophie and I would like to share that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to part ways," the Canadian prime minister wrote on Instagram*. Sophie posted an almost identical message on her social media page.
After Trudeau became prime minister in late 2015, he and Sophie were often seen together at social events and on foreign trips, but in recent years the woman has reduced the number of such meetings with her husband.
In May, former Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin announced her divorce from her husband Markus Räikkenen.
