G20 Grants African Union A Permanent Membership

The G20, a group of major economies, has made a significant decision by granting permanent membership to the African Union.

This move, reported by Bloomberg News, would elevate the African Union to the same status as the European Union. Currently, the African Union holds the designation of an “invited international organisation.”

The G20’s decision is a significant step towards recognizing the African Union as a major player on the global stage.

The proposal for the African Union’s full membership was put forward by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June. His letter to G20 leaders called for the African Union to be given permanent membership, just like the European Union.

This proposal was met with support from countries such as Germany, Brazil, and Canada, further cementing the belief that the African Union deserves a seat at the G20 table.

The G20 currently consists of 19 countries and the European Union. However, for this year’s summit in New Delhi, the G20 has extended invitations to nine non-member countries, including Bangladesh, Singapore, Spain, and Nigeria. Additionally, international organisations such as the United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund will also be in attendance. This signifies the G20’s commitment to inclusivity and cooperation across borders.

During the upcoming summit, the leaders of the G20 are expected to announce their decision to grant permanent membership to the African Union. This decision is not only a recognition of the African Union’s growing influence but also an acknowledgment of the continent’s economic potential. With its 55 member states, the African Union represents a significant portion of the world’s population and has the potential to contribute significantly to global GDP and trade.

The G20 is an intergovernmental forum that brings together the world’s major developed and developing economies. Its members account for approximately 85% of global GDP, over 75% of global trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population. The G20 plays a crucial role in addressing global economic challenges and promoting international cooperation.

Granting permanent membership to the African Union is a momentous decision that reflects the G20’s commitment to inclusivity and recognizing the contributions of emerging economies. It also underscores the importance of Africa’s role in shaping the future of the global economy. By granting the African Union this status, the G20 is signalling its confidence in the continent’s ability to drive economic growth and progress.

The permanent membership of the African Union in the G20 will provide a platform for African leaders to engage with their counterparts from around the world.

This membership will allow the African Union to voice its concerns, priorities, and perspectives on key global issues. It will also enhance collaboration between African nations and the G20, leading to greater economic opportunities and development on the continent.
